Luke 15:11-32 |
Everyone loves a good play or drama. In every successful drama, there is something which makes a person say. "Hey, that's me." The story becomes a mirror in which self-recognition produces self-understanding. Many of the stories the Lord Jesus told have that effect. To read them properly is to see ourselves. But they are more than mirrors -- they become windows into the heart of God. Therefore, they not only reveal who we are, but they help us know who God is.
The parables considered in this series of messages are very familiar to everyone. Because we think we know these stories, we do not really listen to them. Sit again at the feet of Jesus, listen to His words, and take another glimpse into the heart of God. |

Moses

| God's call to Moses required him to throw down his staff (his security), and then, facing his fears, pick it up again. His staff, now transformed by God's power, became "the rod of God" to accomplish great things. God calls us in the same way -- throwing away that which hinders us, and picking up by faith His transformed instruments for His purpose. |
The Choice

| We all make choices -- some inconsequential and mundane, some temporally significant, and one eternally consequential choice. In Jesus we must choose between a religion of human achievement (a religion of our own construction) v. the religion of divine accomplishment (in which Jesus has already done everything we could not). |
Out of Touch or In Touch?

Isaiah 40:25-31 |
| The accumulation of struggles and circumstances beyond our control often convince us that God has lost touch with us. However, in Isaiah 40:25-31, the prophet demonstrates that it is impossible for God to lose track of us. His words awakens us to the fact that we are the ones who lose touch with God. It happens when we allow stress, impatience, and sometimes disobedience to diminish the character of God and all that He has done in the vast universe surrounding us. |
