Andrew Hawkins, Pastor of Adult Ministries
Wife – Jean Hawkins
Children – Matthew (b. 1977) and Kate (b. 1982)
Pastor Hawkins and Jean both grew up in Maryland in a small town about 30 miles north of Washington, D.C. Andy attended Slippery Rock State College (north of Pittsburgh) for his undergraduate work in physical education. Jean completed her undergraduate degree in music at Western Maryland College in Westminster, Maryland. They were married in 1976 when Andy was pursing his masters and doctoral degrees at the Ohio State University.
Andy took a position at WVU in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences in 1980. He and Jean have been members of the Morgantown C&MA Church since 1981. During the mid-1980's the Lord began to draw Andy and Jean into more significant ministry roles in the Morgantown Church. Andy enrolled in the C&MA Ministerial Study program to prepare for more formal vocational ministry. He served as Interim Pastor during eight months in 1989 during a time of senior pastor transition. During this time Jean was serving as Choir Director. In 1990 Andy was appointed Pastor of Adult Ministries and has served in that capacity part time ever since while continuing to hold a full time appointment as Professor at WVU. He completed the Ministerial Study Program in 1992 and was ordained in 1993 by the Christian and Missionary Alliance.
Pastor Hawkins has pastoral oversight of about 15 adult groups and organizations in the Morgantown Church. There are a number of Adult Bible Fellowships offering Sunday morning Bible study, fellowship, and pastoral care for a significant segment of our congregation. There are in-depth discipleship ministries, small home groups, outreach ministries, and ministries to support our own church family as well as missionaries. Leaders of each adult ministry consult with Pastor Hawkins’ for training, resources, encouragement, prayer, and problem solving.
Pastor Hawkins sees his ministry as encouragement and instruction focused primarily on the leaders of the adult ministries in our church. He acts as a resource person for finding materials for study groups, helps group develop their own leadership teams, and assists leadership teams to focus their ministries in ways that fulfill their God-given roles within our fellowship. His primary gifts revolve around the ministry of teaching, the focus of which is the Alliance Bible Study Center, a ministry he helped found in 1988. He and Jean also assist Jeremy Andrews, the Director of the College Church, a parallel church of students which holds its services on Sunday evenings.
The greatest delights in ministry for Pastor Hawkins include the opportunity to use his teaching gifts in various ministries of the church, working with the excellent leadership God has raised up for those ministries, and simply rubbing shoulders with the wide diversity of backgrounds and nationalities represented in our “crossroads” community. The Morgantown Alliance Church has been a wonderful place for the Hawkins to worship, grow, minister, and raise a family for 30 years. Their son Matt (wife Crystal) lives in Arlington, VA, and their daughter Kate (husband Brad) live near Philadelphia.
